Smarty Pants Leash Walking Course

This service is targeted to help dogs who pick up on training quickly, with no behavioural issues, learn how to walk on leash.

Jax’s Method is to teach humans how to properly communicate to their pup in a way that makes sense to them. The idea is to make the conversation clear between human and dog. The results you wish to see rely on your consistency, hard work, openness to learn and willingness to change.

The first step to attending this course is to set up an assessment where Jax comes to your home to observe your pup in their own environment. The assessment includes a 45 minute to 1 hour discussion around the issues you’re having with your pup, your goals that you wish to achieve, and observing how you and your pup interact. There is a $200.00 + GST fee for the assessment if you decide not to book your pup in for the course. If you sign up for the course, the assessment fee is waived.

Dogs will learn the following at during the Canine Etiquette Course:

  • Jax’s unique shadow exercises. Your dog will mirror your every step forwards and backwards with eyes on you! They will also learn to stop when you stop. 

  • Look to their human for direction before reacting first. Accept and avoid distractions. 

  • Respect the space around all thresholds. An open door means “Wait, be patient and relaxed, and give eye contact asking for permission before going through a threshold, into a vehicle, out of a kennel, or onto furniture.

Your pup will stay at the WildFree farm for 1 weeks. During this 1 week stay, your pup will have an average of 10-15 minutes of work every hour, to ensure that they are not overstimulated while they’re learning. The remaining time is spent outside in the Exploration Park or with the pack, having free rein of the WildFree Farm.

Includes:

  • 2 week stay at the WildFree Farm

  • Training includes: leash walking, looking to the human for direction, patiently and attentively walking centred behind the human.

  • 6 human training sessions held at the farm with more sessions available at additional cost.

Through this process, please keep in mind that it is more about how you feel and the timing in which you approach your pup than what you are actually “doing”. The exercises are very similar with each one of the WildFree clients, but the approach in how Jax teaches each new dog and human varies. Every pup learns a different way, just as humans do, so she modifies and adjusts to each human and dogs learning capabilities.

The Smarty Pants Leash Walking Course is offered during the months of January, February, March, April, May, September and October. Maximum of three training dogs at any given time on the WildFree Farm.

  • I was at my wits end with my two big rescues from the reserve. The big girl (110lbs) was getting more reactive, pulling me over when she lunged at other dogs. The other one (90 lbs) just followed her lead. Jax was my last resort, recommended to me as 'Alberta's Cesar Milan'. And she didn't disappoint. One month with her and my reactive, barking, out-of-control dogs became my pack, following my lead, doing what I wanted when I wanted it.   • I have worked with and trained dogs all of my life. Three years ago I felt ready to move into breeding top Australian Shepherds (Big Rock Australian Shepherds in Okotoks, AB) for conformation, agility and obedience. I currently have a pack of 6 (a top in Canada male Aussie stud, and two females; one imported from Europe and the other a female puppy from a recent litter of 11 from my breeding pair. I also have 2 Golden retriever pets, and a sheltie. My male Aussie in 2022 was the top puppy in Canada and in the top 10 of all Australian Shepherds. Something changed in my pack when I chose to keep the puppy Aussie. My Golden retriever female became aggressive towards the puppy and possessive of me and everything else, bones, food, balls, etc. I tried everything in my tool box and then call Jax. I have learned a whole new world of communication with my dogs; not just my retriever but my whole pack. Sometimes you just need a bigger tool box!. I am still learning and cannot wait to see how this learning and training is going to help better balance my pack, my relationship with them, and help my dogs reach their potential (without me losing my sanity) in and out of the ring.
